Immigration minister Phil Woolas is one of those delightful left-wing racists history throws up from time to time, and in the Guardian yesterday he had this to say:
“Enoch Powell was trying to divide this country. I’m trying to heal this country by allowing us to have a mature debate on immigration”
Here’s what he meant, as explained by Anton Vowl:
… asking for a ‘mature debate’ means you want to recycle the same old lies and hatred, but hope that claiming you’ve got good intentions means that somehow turns your venom into fluffy bunnies.

I wonder what form of words someone should use if they really do want a mature debate on immigration. (I assume it is possible to have one without being branded a racist.)

According to the BBC:
Phil Woolas has defended his pledge that the British population would not be allowed to exceed 70 million.
The immigration minister told the BBC that while “movement from EU” could not be precisely predicted, the “general trend” could be controlled.
He said the 70 million figure was not his, but had been “speculated” about and he wanted to reassure the public.
Seems a reasonable viewpoint to me.
