Once again, Charles Clarke MP, former Home Secretary and Blairite attack lion has taken time away from his watering hole to take a dig at Gordon Brown in an article for the New Statesman. And, as with his Prospect article back in May, the media have hungrily devoured his words (helped along of course by the obligatory follow-up broadcast interviews) after a long, dry month in which the Labour party seemed almost united*.
Let’s face it, this preening egotist should give up the pretence he cares about the Labour party and admit he’s pursuing a vendetta against a man he has never wanted to become prime minister. The number of people who support him in the Labour parliamentary party probably rank somewhere in the single digits and why both the press and broadcast media seem so content to run with “enemy of Gordon Brown attacks Gordon Brown” is beyond me.
* During recess it’s easy for the party to seem united as its MPs are so far apart.
