Boris Johnson Resignation Watch

Tuesday 6th May 2008 · 5 Comments

Boris Johnson, newly elected Mayor of London and MP for Henley*, has declared he will stand down from Parliament "as soon as possible", but how soon will that be?

On the day of the election, The Times ran a story hinting that Boris could remain an MP for up to a year, quoting the Conservative agent in Henley, John Walsh on the selection of a candidate:

“This will not be done in a rush. We have a timetable to select a candidate before the summer holiday, with a potential for an autumn or spring by-election.”

A quick search on the Treasury website confirms that he has yet to take the Manor of Northstead from Peter Mandelson** and is still the proud owner of two geographically disparate jobs. Therefore introducing the Boris Johnson Resignation Watch!

Taking as its starting point midnight Sunday, when Boris officially took office, the timer in my sidebar will count up until the Mayor stands down as MP, letting the good people of Henley know just how long it is they’ve been neglected.

1 day, 13 hours, 20 minutes so far…

* Beautiful place, great pubs.
** Long story, Wikipedia explains it quite well. Interestingly, Tony Blair is the current Steward and Bailiff of the Three Hundreds of Chiltern.
