Here’s a dilemma. A film grosses $77 million at the US box office, and proves mildly popular at the UK box office (taking fourth positions when it opens). It’s about the Second World War, and we all know how obsessed with that period in history us Brits are, so it’s surely prime BBC material. But here’s the catch: it grossly distorts British history, depicting the Americans as being the first to capture an Enigma machine from the vile Hun. The film? U-571. The time and place? 9.30pm, Saturday 12th January on BBC2.
It’s got Richard Holloway so worked up he’s created a Facebook group in protest and is urging everyone to write in to the BBC to complain.
